ETHICAL STANDARD IN SCHOOL SUPERVISION OF INSTRUCTION: A STUDY OF PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN AFIKPO EDUCATION ZONE OF EBONYI STATE

The main focus of this study was to investigate the extent to which principals adopt ethical standard in supervision of instruction in public secondary schools in Afikpo Education Zone of Ebonyi State. The study was guided by two specific purposes, two research questions and two null hypotheses. The study adopted a descriptive research design with the population of 82 public secondary schools while the sample size of the study was 264 respondents,selected from 1057 teachers through Yaro Yamane Formular with indefinite population from public secondary schools locateat the five local government area of Afikpo education zone of Ebonyi State. The instrument used for the data collection for the study was a self-structure questionnaire title ethical standard in school supervision of instruction questionnaire (ESS1Q). The instrument was validated by two experts from the Department of Educational Foundations, Educational Administration and Planning unit and one expert from science education department, measurement and evaluation unit,all in Faculty of Education Ebonyi State University, with a reliability coefficient index of r=O.83 obtained through the Cronbach alpha statistical procedure which was a confirmation that the instrument was highly. Data collected were analysis using mean (x) and standard deviation (SD) and t-test statistics was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings of the study indicated that principals in public secondary school in Afikpo educational zone adopt ethical standard in instructional supervision in a low extent. And that there is no significant difference in the mean response of urban and rural teachers on the extent to which ethical standard in instructional supervision were adopted by principals in public secondary schools in Afikpo Education zone. And also the there is no significant difference in the mean response of urban and rural teachers on the extent to which ethical values adopted by principal improve lesson delivery in public secondary school in Afikpo Education Zone of Ebonyi State. Based on the findings, it was recommended that principal in public secondary school should be given orientation on the values of adopting ethical standard during supervision of instruction in their various schools also that the appointment of principal should be done strictly based on merits and competence for the successful actualization of quality control in public secondary schools in Afikpo Education Zone of Ebonyi State.
