Abstract

For universities to meet their set goals, there must be opportunity for career development and management. In this paper, career development refers to further training for university lectures who possess in different subject fields but with a postgraduate qualification in education, while career management refers to the ability of the university authorities to encourage and retain her academic staff. The paper will discuss developing career management in education, programmes for career management, career development through training/training workshop, career development through mentoring, problems of career development and management. Finally, there is dire need for universities to develop strategic plan to effectively implement set goals for career development. It involves steps, major objectives and intent with development of alternative strategies discussed. The paper proposed identifying and belonging to professional bodies as a recommendation and concludes that despite the problems faced by academic staff in the course of furthering their education, the prospects for this tasks is very rewarding, because it is the key to employment especially in this period of high competition in the labour market
