Abstract

This study examined institutional variables and academic staff service delivery in universities in Cross River State, Nigeria.  The study is an Ex-post facto research that involved a stratified random sample of 449 academic staff from the three universities in Cross River State. The population of the study was 2768 academic staff. two research questions were answered using descriptive statistics. The reliability and validity for the questionnaires were obtained using Cronbach Coefficient Alpha of .81.90. Data collection was carried out using institutional variables and academic staff service delivery questionnaire (IVASSDQ). Two theories were used to support the study and literature reviews were carried out accordingly to the variables of the study. Independent t-test and One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Fisher Least Significant Difference were used to test the hypotheses. The results obtained revealed that institutional leadership style and climate significantly influence academic staff service delivery. From the result it was concluded that to a large extent, academic staff service delivery is dependent on institutional variable. From the findings and conclusion, it was recommended among others that, the university leadership should practice and lead by democratic principles especially now that university is autonomous. That will give the academic staff a sense of inclusiveness that is motivational and productive; lecturers on training in university and the highly ranked lecturers should establish a good working climate that is motivational and encourages mentorship; the university administration should establish a calm and more positive working climate to bring the best for the achievement of university goal.
